Wimmerlin Julia
1977
Julia Wimmerlin - Ukrainian-born, Swiss-based visual artist, over ten years of practicing photography Julia Wimmerlin weathered seismic shifts in her artistic journey from travel photography to contemporary mixed media.
After leaving her native Kyiv, she resided and worked in various countries across Europe and Asia. Armed with degrees in Economics and Marketing, she pursued an international marketing career until 2014 when she transitioned to travel photography. Julia is primarily self-taught, drawing upon her background in advertising to create clear impactful visual stories.
The early 2020-s upheavals profoundly impacted her, leading to a metamorphosis in her photographic approach. Embracing contemporary fine art photography, she embarked on in-depth research projects, seeking to understand the evolving world around her and her role within it. Striving for deeper subject representation, Julia committed to an art education program.
These upheavals also left their mark on the aesthetics of Julia's works, evolving vibrant concrete imagery into symbolic representations bordering on the dreamlike. Julia explores the endless citation and reinterpretation of "grand narratives" of postmodernism. Her subjects, ranging from travel and animals to studio work are the symbolic representations bordering on the dreamlike. Much like dreams encapsulate our daily concerns, future fears, and past memories, Julia's works possess simultaneously retrospective, contemporary and futuristic qualities. Each photograph serves as a portal into the subconscious, a reflection of the fantastical visions that dance at the edges of our slumber. From landscape to portrait, the borders of reality start to erode, the overlay of colors and lines creates semi-abstract, feminine, and elusive, surrealistic, and full of emotions photographic views.
Julia’s works have been published in various prestigious publications including The New York Times, The Guardian, The Times, Le Figaro, National Geographic, and GEO amongst others. Her works received multiple international awards including Photographer of the Year title in competitions like International Photo Awards, Prix de la Photographie Paris, Sony World Photography Awards, and have been exhibited across the globe. Julia’s photographs were included in a book of the French art gallery and publishing house, FORM.Paris, showcasing works by selected Ukrainian artists "100 Contemporary Ukrainian Photographers”, 2024 and in and art book «Fresh Eyes Talent» by Dutch publisher GUP, Haute Photographie, 2024.
